| Hi All! This is Rajender Beniwal, Business Development Officer. I've been working for a year now. The present job is more of business Development than Sales. I'm interested in enterprise-software sales but can't leave this job as the work environment over here suites me a lot and above all the company neds my services. I wanted to know, whether there are any part time jobs I can apply for? Will this excercise be useful for me in the longterm? Is this experience worth those extra 4-5 hours I spend on my parttime job? PLZ ADVICE... Just to let you know.. I'm an MBA (mktg) and my graduation degree is B.Sc. (comp Sc.) Waiting for your suggestions.. Regards, -Raj Hi, Interesting are your thoughts. Let me well verse you with some of the underlying facts, well! surely Business Development is a very vast term and encapsulates even sales into it. But if you say you are not a part of sales team I then can't understand as I started my career as a BD and am still working as a BD. For you a nice piece of cake would be to work with some MNC as a sales associate for Indian sub continent, its not far flunk you'll obviously come across many such avenues if you really devote some time and explore. Other then this show your concern over this critical issue with your higher management that you want to be a part of the sales team as well. As sales is the most integral part of a Business Developer and at the end you'll be questioned only on the accounts of your sales volume which i've been confronted with. So go ahead and discuss. Regards Vivek Thanks a lot Vivek, that'll surely be helpful.. Let me be more clear.. I am into Small and Home Office products division. I just need to be in action over the net, it takes a few e-mails, price $ discount decisions, etc. Nothing like hardcore sales. Iwas wrong in putting it as less of sales - but you know, my actionables are limited to my PC. For that reason.. I was planning to take up a part-time enterprise sales job. (i'm not sure whether companies offer any such thing Thanks again for your advice -Raj Hi Rajendra, Further to your understanding many companies do entail people as free lancers who commission major chunk of sales to these entities. But its limit is towards the national premises. If you want to work as an associate with some company it very much possible although you need to be stringent with your time scheduling. Dont know much about the possible avenues in IT industry but its presence could be easily reckoned in Banking and Insurance Industry. Other then this I have some IT companies (internationally located) on board who recruit people as free lancers on commission base, the comprehensive list would be sent to you some time sooner as I am busy with my tight schedule. Most of all to my confrontation, web is the basic interface to market a software application. But its declining day by day and would pace further, so I suggest if you have time and resources to direct or allocate for some other company you can go for it. Because as I told you the first and last thing which is pondered upon at the end is the amount of sales volume uve generated for the company. Keep in touch!! Vivek RAJENDER: From the brief, I infer that you are a young management graduate and have been lead-generating using the net. In my opinion, for a person in the threshold of his marketing career, he should go out, meet clients and understand their requirements and make sales pitch accordingly. Only this way can he be able to understand the ground realities of marketing besides building up his confidence to design sales strategies and deliver measurable results. I would firmly advise you not to think of a part time job at this phase of your career. Unless you have plans to mould yourself into an entrapraneur you should not yeild to the temptation of dual assignments. You would do justice to neither; the day to day ups and downs in one assignment would have a rub off on the other and consequently you may have to do a lot of adjustment in terms of moral accountability. Having told this, can I summarise my recommendations? a) Talk to your current employer openly about your career plans and how you would be interested in taking up a full fledged marketing assignment. (Invariably, organisations are open to support the goal desire of employees as long as it does not conflict the interest of the organisation) b) Spend time in developing your theory base by reading relevant books/magazines and by going through various websites. c) If you are fully convinced that your current employers may not be able to help you in realising your goal, you should start looking for a change. Even if you get an offer from a small organisation with a value commitment, you can take up the assignment. Please note that there is no dearth of opportunity for marketing assignments and all that one needs to do is to earnestly look out. d) The first 5 Years of your career is the LEARNING PHASE during which time you should be focussed on the assignment and its potential. You earn your credentials through your creative approach and value addition. A dual assignment would hardly be suitable. d) DON'T THINK OF DUAL ASSIGNMENT now. KEEP THAT OPTION WHEN YOU ARE MATURED INTO A CONSULTANT!! All the best R. Nagarajan
