Understanding customers is another big subject, which is why so many books and publications are written in this subject. You can read Why We Buy by Paco Underhill. Introduction to consumer behaviour (any MBA text) will also be helpful.

Is this same for the FMCG market... as far as i have understood the market,market says that cheaper the product and having a descent quality.. ur products will sell like hot cakes!!

No , All Markets are not the same. you cannot have same strategy for selling a FMCG Product and a Software Product. Understanding Markets and understanding Users preferences and their buying behavior are important before formulating any Marketing Strategy.
